SURGICAL SERVICES

In some cases, it will be discovered that a surgical option is most prudent for the situation. The MOGA physicians have a great deal of experience in performing gynecological surgeries. Fortunately, many procedures which historically had to be handled at a surgical facility may now be performed in our office.

IN-OFFICE PROCEDURES

In-office procedures performed by MOGA physicians include:

  • Hysteroscopy (for viewing the lining of the uterus)
  • Hysterosonography (utilizes the injection of a small amount of water through the cervix into the uterus for better utilization).
  • Colposcopy (examines the cervix, vagina, and vulva for diagnosis)
  • Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure [LEEP] (to examine the cervix)
  • Endometrial Ablation (for removing the endometrial lining of the uterus due to heavy menstrual bleeding). One form of ablation often used by MOGA physicians is NovaSure.
  • Cryosurgery (application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased cervical tissue)
  • Cystometrics (bladder function test in which perssure and fluid volume of the bladder are measured)
  • Permanent birth control procedures such as Essure are also performed within in the office.

OUTPATIENT / HOSPITAL PROCEDURES

A tubal ligation involves closing off the fallopian tubes by either clipping, cutting and tying, or cauterizing. Once this is done, the egg can no longer travel down the uterus, and sperm cannot make contact with the egg. A hysterectomy is the complete surgical removal of the uterus. In some cases, the ovaries are removed as well. A hysterectomy is often performed to correct other physical issues such as uterine fibroids and excessive menstrual bleeding. In recent years, non-invasive forms of hysterectomy have been developed. These have a much shorter recovery period. Some of our MOGA physicians perform laparoscopic hysterectomies and da Vinci hysterectomies. These and other outpatient or surgical procedures are performed at a hospital or surgery center. These are usually scheduled in advance and coordinated by our patient representative.
