BIRTH CONTROL
MOGA patients who are wishing to avoid pregnancy have a variety of methods from which to choose. It should be noted that no form of birth control, with the exception of hysterectomy, can provide a 100% guarantee. However, most are very helpful in providing a strong measure of security. Your MOGA physician will be happy to discuss these methods in greater detail, and help select the one which is most appropriate.
NON-SURGICAL METHODS
These include pills, implants, injections, patches, and vaginal rings. Your MOGA physician will be happy to advise you regarding the most suitable option for your situation.
REVERSIBLE BIRTH CONTROL
The most common forms of reversible birth control are the Intrauterine System (IUS) and the Intrauterine Device (IUD). Both are placed in the womb, and are a small T-shaped frame made from flexible plastic. The frame is about 3 cm long and wide. The two most common forms of these devices are Mirena and Paragard.
PERMANENT BIRTH CONTROL
MOGA also offers hormone-free methods of permanent birth control which are performed within the office. Soft inserts are slid through the natural paths of the vagina and cervix into the fallopian tubes. The most common form of permanent birth control is Essure.
SURGICAL BIRTH CONTROL
When circumstances make it most appropriate, traditional surgical methods of permanent birth control may also be performed by your MOGA physician. The most common surgical birth control procedure is tubal ligation, which involves closing off the fallopian tubes by either clipping, cutting and tying, or cauterizing. Once this is done, the egg can no longer travel down the uterus, and sperm cannot make contact with the egg.
